The Hills Tennis Association (HTTA) has a longstanding commitment to the development of juniors in the great game of table tennis. This is to ensure that the game continues to grow in the Adelaide Hills region. The commitment to junior development effectively started back in 1987 when, with the support of the State Body, over 30 primary and secondary schools were circulated to become involved in establishing a solid Friday night competition. It was attended by as many as 140 pupils each season. Some of the pupils are still playing table tennis in the Hills; e.g. William Henzell and Tammy Gough went on to represent Australia at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Many others went on to play in Adelaide-based competitions. Some of the coaches in those days were Jerry Fitzsimmons, Duncan Kennington, Peter Holcroft and Ken West. These were supported by over 12 Level “0” coaches. These were the ‘hay days’ of the HTTA, and the commitment continues to this day.
The HTTA’s Junior Development Program caters for the 7 – 14 age group and takes in:
a) Juniors who have joined a member club,
b) Training clinics at local schools and social groups,
c) Any individual junior who joins one of the scheduled training clinics.
The HTTA’s Junior Development Program is now managed by Sigi Stoeger, and for several years Sigi has run successful coaching clinics for many Hills juniors.
