Week 5 Junior Results - tight tussle for second place

The battle for second place became even tighter following some hard fought matches in week 5 of the junior spring competition. Ben narrowly edged out Stephen 13-11 in the fifth. Stephen came out firing against James, winning in three short sets, and ensuring he would draw level with James in third place. Stephen got home in three against Jimmy, though Jimmy pushed him further each set. Levi was unlucky not to pick up a set in a close match with Ben, 12-10 in the third.  Ben continued his winning streak overcoming the fast reactions of Jimmy. Stephen looked comfortable in his match against Levi, winning in three. But Levi recovered to compete in a tough match against James, prevailing in five and securing second on the ladder. Jimmy picked up a set against James 13-11 in the first, but couldn't hold on as James lifted to take the next three. Levi took out the final singles match, 11-9 in the third against Jimmy.  The doubles started with a tense first set, Jimmy & Stephen prevailing over Levi & James 13-11. However Levi & James soon found a rhythm, taking the next three sets.

The competition wraps up next week at the Cherry Gardens Hall from 7pm. All under-14 juniors from beginners up are most welcome to come and have a hit.

Nail-biting Drama in Round 4 of Spring Junior Competition

The tension was broken only by bursts of spontaneous applause as the top two players in the HTTA Junior Spring Competition delivered a very high standard of play in their first official meeting. Ben and James, who were Aldgate Allstars team-mates in the Division 5 Shield competition, are also brothers. The epic match went to five sets, with the intense approach of Ben eventually edging out the cool and steady approach of James 17-15 in the fifth.

The high standard was maintained as Stephen played Alex in a topspin standoff. Stephen continued his good form, taking the match in four sets. Levi delivered a major upset, taking out former Aldgate Allstars team mate and competition number 2 James in four sets. Competition leader Ben was too strong for Jimmy, though the huge improvement in Jimmy's play since the first week was a revelation. Stephen and Levi overcame James and Alex in a fun-filled doubles that went to four sets. The results see Ben narrowly increase his lead over other contenders, while James and Levi draw level in second, strongly challenged by Stephen and Alex. Shane continues a steady accumulation of points, and Jimmy's improvement is seen as he equals or betters his games tally each week.

Round 1 of Spring Junior Competition Underway

Round 1 of the spring junior competition got underway on Monday 5th November at the Cherry Gardens Hall. Eight players formed into four two-a-side teams. Team 1 - Stephen and James - got away to an early start with a straight sets doubles win over Team 2 - Jimmy and Nick. Stephen performed strongly, winning both his singles in straight sets. Newcomer Jimmy did well to snatch a set from experienced former Allstar player James. Nick fought hard in his match against James, winning the first and fourth sets, but couldn't hold on, going down bravely 10-12 in the final set. Team 1 saw out the contest 5-15 to 0-3.

Team 4 - Alex and Levi triumphed in straight sets in the doubles over Team 3 - Ben and Shane, in a match which belied the close singles matches that were to come. Ben was consistently strong, winning both his singles. Shane got away to an early start winning the first set from Levi 14-12, before Levi fought back to take the following three. Alex was pushed by a determined Shane who chased down every ball, but secured a win in the fourth set 13-11. Team 4 took the win, 3-10 to 2-8.

The competition continues next Monday night, when a bigger turnout should see the standard raised even higher. For more information contact Ross on 8370 8216.
